                       Troubles? Let us know!

If you are having troubles that we should address, please do not
hesitate to let us know! As often and as vehemently as is required.
Complaining -- er, trouble reporting -- is the easiest part of solving
a problem, yet the one that seems hardest to do. So don't be polite,
don't hold off. If you're expecting us to fix something, and we don't
know of it (or think we've already dealt with it), the problem will
only get worse. If you're not satisfied with our response to a ques-
tion or a report, please say so. We won't know otherwise. If there's
something you think we could be doing better, or differently, we'd
love to hear it and discuss it.

You should have our office phone as well as home and other
numbers: use them if you need to! You are, after all, paying to get
what you want. We do not want any lingering problems if there's some-
thing we can do about them.

                Long-awaited 56Kb upgrade: it's here!

The upgrade in our Internet connection that we announced last
month, from 9.6Kb to 56Kb, is finally here. Almost. It is scheduled
to be done on April 21, probably by the time you get this newsletter.
While you may not see the difference, this will make network perfor-
mance a lot better at MV, and make room for some other things down the
road.

                           MV hosts NNEUUG

The March 31st meeting of the NNEUUG (Northern New England Unix
Users Group) was held at the MV Communications office in Litchfield
NH. Besides being a very interesting meeting, with a panel discussion
about ISVs and VARs, this occasion gave us an opportunity to meet with
a number of you. Thanks to all who came!

NH Conference on Technology and Information Exchange

We attended the above-mentioned conference at the Sheraton Way-
farer in Bedford NH on April 1. It was opened by Governor Judd Gregg,
and featured a number of interesting speakers from many walks of tech-
nology planning, use, and development. Notes on this meeting will be
available online and also by request.

                      MV newsgroup organization

The mv hierarchy of newsgroups is being rearranged to better
allow for management of newsgroups as needed now and in the future.
We have switched to the following hierarchies:

mv.admin.all MV Communications, Inc. operations issues.
mv.forum.all Discussions about things in the MV sphere.
        mv.info.all General information
        mv.test General test group.

This will increase, probably soon. A list of mv newsgroups and
hierarchies can always be found in the MV archives (look for the file
mvgroups in /news2/pub/mv/news).

As part of this reorganization, some of the existing mv newsgroups are
being renamed:

     mv.announce ---> mv.admin.announce
     mv.billing ---> mv.admin.policy
     mv.general ---> mv.forum.general

We will continue to send you the newsgroups you currently receive
under their new names. You may post to any of the open groups (e.g.,
mv.test and mv.forum.all) using your news software. If you do not
have news software, you can receive any of these groups by mail, and
post to any of the open groups by sending mail to the group name at
mv. For example, to post by mail to mv.forum.general, send mail to
mv.forum.general@mv.mv.com.

                      Dynafeed discussion group

A new newsgroup, mv.forum.dynafeed, has been created to talk
about dynafeed. dynafeed is the newsgroup-subscription server that we
use to allow you to manage your news feed subscription by yourself.
We believe that dynafeed is nice but does not go far enough. We'd
like to use this group to talk about where to go in the future.

Whatever happened to an FTP server?

One of our early plans was to have an FTP server up and running

by now. We thought, in our naivety, that we'd simply just obtain one
and install it, and voila! instant FTP server. Unfortunately we were
never able to locate an FTP server.

We've had to fall back to a longer-term plan. We expect to write
a generic Internet service server onto which we can attach specific
services (e.g. FTP, finger, whois, archie, gopher, lat-long, zipcode,
etc.). There are certain other things happening that have pushed this
toward the end of the queue in favor of some things that can be done
sooner.

In the meantime, though, we can satisfy FTP and other requests
manually. Send mail to mv-admin@mv.mv.com with your requests, and
we'll likely be able to do it within a day. Also, decwrl's "ftpmail"
server can be used to get FTP requests serviced by mail. Jeff
Coffler's recent posting to mv.general described this quite well.
(This posting is available for download from the mv archives: see
/news2/pub/mv/info/ftpmail).

                             MV Archives

New arrivals in the MV archive (as always, check out the ls-lR file
for a complete directory):

/news2/pub/uucp/taylor-1.03/tay1.03.tar.Z is the latest version of
Taylor UUCP - a source code implementation of UUCP for UNIX systems.
There are also several patches to this version in this directory.

/news2/pub/mv/clarinet contains several files describing ClariNet, the
online information service. If you want to know more about what Clar-
iNet offers, how much it costs, and how to get it, check out these
files. The files are "full" (the full scoop on Clarinet), "prices",
"terms", and "trial" (how to try it out before deciding to buy).

As always, the latest UUCP maps are available in /news2/pub/uucpmaps
in compressed form.
