Weather GIFs now available on MV

We're now automatically fetching GIFs of satellite weather pic-
tures and annotated weather maps, and making them available for UUCP
download. These maps are stored in the directory /news2/pub/WXGIFS on
mv.mv.com, and a special file "index" is kept up to date with a direc-
tory listing of the files in that area. These files are periodically
gathered and expired on a 1-2 day time frame, so the index file is a
bit of a picture of a moving target. GIF files have names that
reflect the kind of image and the time of the image. For example, the
file SA082613.GIF is a Surface Analysys (SA) file produced on August
26 (0826) at about 13:00 GMT. File types include CI, which is a
western view photo; CV, a combined view photo; SA, the above-mentioned
surface analysis map; and U2, U3, U5, U7, U8, which are various anno-
tated weather maps. A key to the annotations can be found in in the
file WXKEY.GIF.

Note that not all files are produced at all hours (some are pro-
duced every 12 hours), and that there are often intervals for which
expected files are not available. Note also that all file names
(excepting the index file) are in uppercase.

                                BBLISA

BBLISA is a new organization formed in the Boston area to address
large-scale system administration topics. Two meetings have been held
as of September 1992: the first was an overview of the administration
problems and solutions at MIT, and was quite interesting; the second
was a presentation of NEARnet which, unfortunately, we were unable to
attend. There is a mailing list for those interested in BBLISA; the
best way to join this list is to join the local list expander at MV --
send mail to mv-admin@mv.mv.com to do so. Alternatively, you can send
mail to bblisa-request@inset.com and request to be added to the list.
(Doing the latter will, in all likelihood, result in a reply asking
you to join at your local expander, i.e., at MV.)

                            Mailing lists

One great source of information and discussion via the networks
is found in the many mailing lists available. There are hundreds of
mailing lists covering a broad range of interests. We keep a recent
list-of-lists file available for download on mv in the file
/news2/pub/mv/news/maillists.

                     Things to remember about MV

+ MV maintains an archive of files related to UUCP and networking,
and of files of recent interest. This archive is in /news2/pub
on mv; a directory (updated nightly) is in the file
     /news2/pub/ls-lR, with a compressed version of /news2/pub/ls-
lR.Z. Files in the archive include mail and news software for
MSDOS and the Macintosh as well as UNIX; Ian Taylor's alternative
UUCP package for UNIX; information about Internetworking; uucp
maps for all of the USA and Canada; MV, NEARnet, and NSFnet pol-
icy statements; program listings from Doctor Dobbs Journal; etc.

+ Feedback is always welcome by sending us mail (mv-
admin@mv.mv.com) or calling us at (603) 429-2223. As we hope you
understand, the office is often unmanned, but an answering
machine will take your message. In an emergency, you can try to
reach one of us via our home or daytime numbers:

                                    home day
             Mark Mallett (603) xxx-xxxx (603) xxx-xxxx
             Marta Greenberg (603) xxx-xxxx (603) xxx-xxxx

+ Remember that the official modem telephone number for all of our
modems is 603-429-1735. This will give you access to all of the
     lines in the hunt group.

+ Please note that if you want to add more mv connections or know
of others that want to connect, running Unix is not a requirement
for uucp access. mv currently has several clients running PCs
and MACs, using uupc, waffle, fernmail, and other uucp-like pack-
ages for these systems. And the software for several of these
packages is available in the public archive.
