                    New MV location: Peterborough

We're pleased to announce that the MV node in Peterborough NH,
named gold.mv.net, is now accessible. The final step occured Friday
Dec 16 with the installation of the long-awaited telephone lines.
Thanks to Ben Smith (ben@ronin.com) for helping to bring this about.

The lead phone number in the Peterborough modem group is 924-0027
. As always, the complete list of telephone numbers at all MV loca-
tions can be found in the 'menu' gopher menu under information about
MV.
     1. Information and Getting Started /
     3. About this service/

The Peterborough node supports online, Dialup IP (SLIP/PPP), and
UUCP accounts. Remember that online and UUCP accounts on any of the
MV systems can be accessed through any of the main MV dialup groups in
New Hampshire by typing the correct access word at the Connect:
prompt. The access word for online accounts in Peterborough is pboro
(or gold), and for UUCP accounts is uucp-pnh.

                          Acronym Mailserver

One of the many useful services on the World Wide Web is an acro-
nym server (an acronym being an abbreviation constructed from roughly
the first letters of the words of a phrase). Normally you would use
it via Mosaic or Lynx, via its URL:

     http://curia.ucc.ie/htbin/acronym

But if you are a uucp user or don't wish to use a browser, you can use
email.

To use the mailserver, send a 1-line eMail message to
freetext@iruccvax.ucc.ie containing one of the following lines in the
body of the message:

a single word (requesting the acronym that matches the word)

more than one word (submitting the first word as the acronym and
     the rest as its expansion)

a single word preceded by a question mark (requesting an expan-
     sion that contains the word)

     help (requesting the help file)

                 Dictionary and Thesaurus Mail Server

Another set of services available by email (and only by email)
can be queried by sending to wordsmith@viper.elp.cwru.edu. In the
Subject of your message, (not the body as with the service above),
put:

     info wordserver

This will return a help file describing how to get

        A.Word.A.Day
        Dictionary/by/Mail
        Thesaurus/by/Mail
        Anagram/by/Mail

                         Email services at MV

We would also like to remind you of a couple of basic email ser-
vices available at mv. For UUCP accounts, without direct access to
this information, you can use the finger and whois internet services
by sending mail to server@mv.mv.com. The Subject of your message
should contain the finger or whois command, e.g.:

        To: server@mv.mv.com
        Subject: finger yanoff@csd4.csd.uwm.edu

That particular finger command will tell you how to obtain Scott
Yanoff's Internet services list, which is a very useful collection
listing other Internet starting points and resources.

                        Question of the Month

Last month we asked you to give us your ideas about the growth of
Internet over the next few years, and where you think MV's place in it
should be. Thanks to those who responded.

The big answer was that the World Wide Web (and its best inter-
face - Netscape) will be the big growth area. As to MV's part in it:
it was recommended that we emphasize commerce, information providers,
and inexperienced users, and start donating services to the non-
commercial community.

Response to these questions has been fairly light over the recent
months and we've decided to discontinue this feature.
