New mail server
Early this month we upgraded the primary mail server. The old server
was getting a bit long in the tooth and we were recently experiencing occa-
sional high loads where you may have found it sluggish -- both for sending
out your email and for accessing your mailbox. The new server is a com-
plete replacement: new motherboard, CPUs, controllers, disk drives, and so
forth, as well as an upgraded UNIX operating system. As mentioned in our
outages page, we had a slight glitch in the upgrade, where mailbox names
longer than 16 characters were not recognized -- this affected very few
customers and was fixed within a couple of hours of it causing a problem.
With that minor exception, the upgrade went smoothly and resulted in a mail
server that should be much more responsive to your needs.
Note that you do not need to do anything to access this new server: it
has simply replaced the old one.
New bandwidth -- finally!
We've had major new bandwidth on order since March with an original
due date of early June, as you probably know if you've been reading our
mentions in this newsletter! This new bandwidth, a brand new T3 to Genu-
ity, has at long last come on line. This gives us multiple T3 connections
to Internet backbones; over the next few months we will be phasing out our
other remaining T1 connections and converting entirely to the multiple T3
configuration. You can keep abreast of this by glancing now and then at
our "backbone connections" page, which you can find by going to our web
page at http://www.mv.com/ and following the "About MV" link.
So why did this take so long? Simply due to delays in provisioning
the underlying circuit. We contracted with a fiber carrier to bring the
circuit from our Manchester location to Genuity's Boston POP. The carrier
encountered unexpected delays in putting the fiber equipment in place and
making it available. Now that it's in place, though, we should find it
easy to add more bandwidth on the new circuit, as well as to add more cir-
cuits using the same carrier should we so desire.
DSL/C promotion through December 8
Still on the fence about getting a DSL connection? If you qualify for
our DSL/C service, you can save $100 if you order before December 8. Ordi-
narily there is a $100 setup fee which is paid to installers to connect and
test your DSL circuit. If you order before December 8, we will credit that
$100 to your account. The $100 credit only covers the setup fee; you will
still be charged for extra items such as a DSL modem or any inside wiring
that you request. Note that we must receive the deposit (along with any
other fees) before placing your order; thus we need to receive the deposit
by December 7 for you to take advantage of this special.
DSL/C is available in a number of areas in NH, MA, and CT, with a
range of pricing and services for residential and business use. See our
DSL page at http://dsl.mv.net/ for more information.

you're a customer running something other than what we have posted, and
want to help us out in Customer Support, feel free to email mv-admin@mv.com
. (Please don't send screen shots right away -- just contact us and let us
know what you have. If we need it, we'll follow up and ask you to send
them.)
