                         Mail server upgrade update

Although things got delayed during the last quarter of 2002, we are
progressing with our designs for the POP server (which, since it primarily
supports mailboxes, we like to call the mailbox server). Last month we
made the first radical change, which added a home directory for every mail-
box account on the mailbox server. With that change, you are now able to
better use the IMAP protocol to access your mailbox accounts. Among other
things, using IMAP will let you maintain multiple mail folders and keep
them on our server.

The next major change (required before we begin adding some of the
other things we've talked about, especially the anti-spam features) will be
to replace the mail delivery system software. This is software that
accepts email from the sender (from you, from another MV user, or from
someone on the outside) and delivers it to its destination (a mailbox at MV
or a destination elsewhere on the Internet). This change will involve
removing the current "sendmail" delivery software and replacing it with
software called "qmail". You may recall from reading past newsletters that
we first made this change on the shell server: the shell server provided a
good testing ground for evaluation on a live system before we fully commit-
ted to replacing the software on the mailbox server.

We would like to stress that you will still be able to access your
mailbox in the same way you always have, and still be able to send outgoing
mail in the same way. The replacement that we are making will add func-
tionality, not remove it. Some of the new functionality will be available
to you immediately, but the bulk of it will be used by us to implement new
features such as spam prevention, mail sorting, and mailing list management
options for you.

We anticipate making this change during early morning hours of Febru-
ary 10, starting around 1AM. The server will be down for several hours
while the work is being done. At that time, please be sure to check
http://home.mv.net/ for status and for more detailed information about the
changes being made.

                              New DSL/V areas

Looking for high-speed DSL access? We have some new DSL/V areas open
-- you may now be able to get DSL service on your existing Verizon phone
line. In addition to the new areas opened up and opening up, we have some
attractive new promotions to help you get hooked up! If you're thinking
about getting on the broadbandwagon, make sure you check us out.

Towns where DSL/V is now available include those served by the central
office in Bedford, Berlin, Claremont, Concord, Conway, Derry, Dover,
Durham, Exeter, Goffstown, Hampton, Hanover, Keene, Laconia, Lebanon, Lit-
tleton, Manchester, Merrimack, Milford, Nashua, South Nashua, Newmarket,
Newport, Pelham, Penacook, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Rochester, Salem,
Seabrook, Somersworth, Suncook, Tilton, Wolfeboro, and White River Junction

tion about availability and promotions.

                           DSL/C pricing changes

Due to some wholesale pricing changes, we have been able to adjust our
rates on two DSL/C products. (DSL/C is an SDSL service that is delivered
to you on a separately-installed line.) Our prices for the 512Kbps and
768Kbps SDSL services have been reduced significantly. Please check
http://dsl.mv.net/ for full information.

                          Dialup and Colo specials

We are offering a special on new standard dialup IP accounts through
February 28, 2003. When a new user signs up for a new dialup IP account,
we require a $25 deposit -- $10 of which is used for an install fee, and
the rest of which is a non-refundable deposit against usage. From now
through February 28, we will not only waive the $10 setup fee (depositing
the entire $25 to the new account), but we will match the $25 deposit with
another $25 (again, credited as a non-refundable deposit towards usage of
the new account).

Also through February 28 we are continuing our colocation special.
Place a system in our colocation area (see http://colo.mv.net/) and your
first two months will be free. (Note that a setup fee, as listed on our
web page, is required.)
