MV Communications Newsletters glossary

This page contains definitions of possibly archane terms and expansion of acronyms used in the MV newsletters.

Used for a variety of things, but most often associated with automatically assigning IP addresses to Internet devices (such as computers). A computer will ask for an IP address, and will receive it (along with other related environmental information) via DHCP.
Term Meaning
blog A Web log: a website or web page where entries are added one at a time, often with a summary entry and an pointer to more detail, and often with capabilities for accepting and displaying comments from readers. Blogs typically have indexes for date/time of entry as well as subject matter, as well as pointers to other sites that have linked back to entries.
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
DLC Digital Loop Carrier. Like a SLC: A small(ish) hut that contains telephone equipment, providing telephone service to a neighborhood or other local area. Instead of running copper wires from each subscriber all the way to the telephone company central office, copper only needs to be run between the DLC and each subscriber. The DLC is in turn connected to the central office via high speed digital circuits (e.g. using fiber). SLCs and DLCs are sometimes referred to as "remote terminals."
DNS Domain Name System. Used on the Internet to translate between names (such as mail.mv.net) and underlying information about that name (such as where to find mail.mv.net).
DSL Digital Subscriber Loop (or Line). Refers to a technology that uses regular telephone wires for high-speed Internet access. See dsl.mv.net for MV's DSL service offerings.

phish, phishing This is a scam that "fishes" for information by tricking the victim into revealing information, usually by making them think they are giving that information to a party that already has it. For instance you might be fooled into thinking you are re-entering your password at your bank's website, when you are really giving it to somebody else.
Remote Terminal A generic term for a subscriber loop concentrator, e.g. a DLC or a SLC.
RSS Rich Site Summary: provides a way of describing fixed and changeable website content. An RSS feed can be used to, for example, provide updates about new headlines on a news site.
SLC Subscriber Loop Carrier. Similar to DLC: this is a cabinet or small hut from which copper wires are run to individual telephone subscribers, rather than running copper all the way from each subscriber location to the central office. The SLC is connected to the central office using fewer wires than is necessary to connect every subscriber, because not all subscribers use their telephone service at the same time. A SLC or a DLC may be referred to as a "remote terminal."
Submission (for mail) The place where (or process whereby) email is injected from an end user into the mail system. Email submission uses its own port number (587) that is distinct from the port used by mailsystem-to-mailsystem communication.
T1 A high speed digital circuit offering 1.5Mbps in each direction. Differs from DSL in that there are no distance limitations, and that service offerings for T1 typically provide for a higher usage level.
Usenet A distributed system for many-to-many dialog. Usenet is like a global bulletin board, with tens of thousands of areas each dedicated to a particular topic.
whitelist In email filters: a list of criteria that identifies "good" mail in some way (or the action of adding to such a list). For instance, if you have set up your filter to make sure mail from "bob@example.com" always gets to you, that sender address is on your whitelist (and you've whitelisted it).
